Ballet Classes
Ballet (for 5 years and up)
Ballet is a highly technical form of dance that develops an awareness of one’s body and its capabilities for movement, strong technique, expression, and sensitivity to music, as well as poise and self-discipline. Ballet is also the foundation for many other dance styles.
From Grade One and up, character work is introduced into the ballet class. Character Dance is the theatrical presentation of national and folk dance. You will see this type of dancing in ballets such as
Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and Don Quixote.
Royal Academy of Dance Ballet classes is taught by a certified teacher.
R.A.D. exams are offered at the discretion of the teacher.
The BC Ministry of Education recognizes R.A.D. ballet exams as external credits for Grades 10-12.
KinderDance (for 3-4-year-olds)
Early exposure to developmentally appropriate movement activities in an instructional environment can help children acquire skills and attitudes that are the foundation for future participation in physical activity.
Goals of the Curriculum are:
- to enhance children’s movement abilities and physical fitness
- to aid children in becoming physically and spatially aware
- to stimulate children’s learning skills
- to encourage children to move expressively
- to build children’s confidence
-to encourage children to become cooperative and sociable
Miss Sandi and Miss Georgia use the Royal Academy of Dance “Dance to Your Own Tune” curriculum as a framework for these classes. There is no emphasis on perfecting movements at this stage!
PBT (ages 7 and up)
It can be difficult for students to feel which muscles initiate the correct alignment needed in their dance training.
PBT (Progressing Ballet Technique) is an innovative conditioning program that trains the use of muscle memory to improve students’ understanding of core stability, weight placement, and alignment. The program uses carefully designed exercises to train skill acquisition in a progressive manner and is appropriate for all levels and genres of dance. With the use of an exercise ball, the students gain core strength and correct alignment while also feeling each correct muscle group working throughout each exercise.
The exercises in this program have been developed with the guidance of physiotherapists and are therefore very helpful with injury prevention and rehabilitation.
